Professor Radu Băncilă, Honorary Member of ASTR
A new recognition of professional excellence for a professor of Politehnica University Timișoara
During a solemn ceremony held in Bucharest at the headquarters of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania (ASTR), Emeritus Professor Radu Băncilă from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Politehnica University Timișoara was awarded the ASTR Honorary Member Diploma, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and engineering.
Prof. em. Dr. Eng. Radu Băncilă is a graduate of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Timișoara, class of 1967. In 1981, he obtained his PhD in engineering, and in 1992 he became a university professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, within the CMMC Department. In 1997, he became a doctoral supervisor, and in 2012 he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of Politehnica University Timișoara.
In 1991, Professor Radu Băncilă initiated the Civil Engineering study programme taught in German, the first non-German studies programme in Romania delivered in the German language. In 1993, Professor Băncilă contributed to establishing a partnership agreement between Politehnica University Timișoara and the Technical University of Munich, and the programme was included in the promotion programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
As former head of the Civil Engineering programme taught in German at Politehnica University Timișoara, Professor Radu Băncilă has made a significant contribution over many years to the development of higher education in Romania, particularly programmes delivered in German.
In 2012, Professor Băncilă was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany – First Class Cross of Merit, presented by the German Ambassador to Romania, Andreas von Mettenheim.
Professor Radu Băncilă is a member or founding member of several major international associations in the field of civil engineering. His academic contributions include:
- 110 scientific papers published in prestigious international journals;
- 10 specialised books published;
- 4 books published in English;
- 2 books published in German.
